NYFW

I was going to post photos, but then I thought – what the heck, no one reads this blog, and on the off chance that someone stumbles across this post on the blogosphere, you can go to style.com and check out what I’m talking about.

Disliked:
- When I first started blogging on a now discontinued blog, one of my first posts was about a Band of Outsiders collection (I think it was Fall 2009). I still prefer the casual cool preppiness of that collection – this whole “fur/cozy knit wearing utilitarian girl” theme is getting very old. Especially after several seasons. Something new please?

Favorites:
- 3.1 Phillip Lim had a surprisingly good show – the beginning was very strong, very functional (loved the cognac leather and blue color combo). The collection stumbled and lost focus a bit in the middle, but regained momentum towards the end.
- PREEN! The prints, the prints, the prints! The silhouettes! The understated sexiness and elegance of it all!
- I will qualify my earlier statement about the utilitarian girl – Rag&Bone is the one line that can pull it off season after season after season after season. Still, I found myself a little bored/tired until I hit the vibrant colors and the bold lines. Definitely one of those shows that I thought I was going to be “meh” about but found myself loving.

Neutral:
- Proenza Schouler’s prints were fantastic. I’m not a huge fan of bright, in your face prints, but geez… these were really attractive. On the other hand, the fringed skirts and generally frumpy silhouettes in the beginning were slightly disappointing.
- Rumor has it, Alexander Wang went to my high school. That’s great and all, but I don’t really get it – the sheerness, the awkward, unflattering cuts, the simultaneous over and underexposure… I know he’s the industry darling and whatnot, but I just don’t understand. The “poking fun at luxury” comment made me chuckle, though.
- I liked Rodarte, but I couldn’t bring myself to love it. The triangular necklines seemed a little too gimicky, and while the femininity and elegance was nice, there wasn’t much freshness brought to the table.

Sometimes…

Not to sound preachy, cliché, or stereotypical, but sometimes you think you have things figured out when life throws a wrench at you. If you can dodge a wrench, you can dodge a ball, but I didn’t really dodge the wrench.

I mentioned in my last post that I was figuring myself out, and I thought that I had successfully unraveled myself. Wrench! It turns out that self-discovery is a process, and expecting otherwise leads to wince-worthy results.

I don’t really plan on elaborating about what happened over the past month, but I will say that the more I fail, the more I learn about my potential to succeed. That sounds really “banner hanging over the whiteboard of a second-grade classroom”-ey but it’s very true right now.

I guess I’ll conclude this post with a throwback picture from my freshman year. Pretty accurately describes the current state of union.

Quick Recap

Oh hey there… let’s get reacquainted, shall we?

I’ve spent the past few weeks months:
- resuscitating my GPA from an all time low. This is, by no means, intended to sound nerdy or stereotypically “Asian;” I was having a ridiculously difficult semester due to a very busy tennis season.
- rediscovering my sartorial tastes. For the longest time, I wanted to dress like the girls in slubby tops and cocoon knits, but I’m beginning to gravitate towards a comparably plainer style.
- learning how to tuck in shirts and look good. Harder than it looks, I assure you.
- incorporating my pairs of heels into my weekend wardrobe (instead of delegating them for the “special occasions” pile).
- figuring out what I really want to do with myself.

I like to think I emerge out of long periods of silence with a better understanding of myself and the world around me, but maybe the only difference now and then is that I wear belts more often. Still good.

Thwarted again!

Today was supposed to be a magical day… the premier of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part I. My school had reserved a theater for an advanced showing at 7:00, and I bought a ticket. Sure, it was the same day where I tutor for an hour, but that’s not going to stop me, right?

And then my history teacher scheduled a huge test. No biggie, I thought. I can work my schedule around it.

And then my Spanish teacher scheduled a huge test. Okay, I thought. If I work in advance, I can study ahead.

And then my Physics, Math, Chemistry, and History teachers scheduled tests during the week (yes, my history teacher scheduled two tests. In the same week).

Thwarted.

Well, I wore Gryffindor colors today, if that’s any consolation for myself.

Do you have any plans to watch Harry Potter?

Homecoming 2010

Homecoming was somewhat a blast! I had a pretty good time, singing loudly (and off key) and dancing very, very embarrassingly.

Thankfully, no wardrobe mishaps! I’m trying to scrounge around for some photos, but it seems as if all photos are in possession of parents.

This is… a very short post. I will try to make it up once this week is over! I have so many tests and projects due this week – I have no idea how I’m going to stay afloat! Thanksgiving break, please come quickly.

Regarding the opening of Pinkberry on Newbury Street

One of the snapshots (taken by one of my lovely friends!) from the beginning of summer 2010, a few days before I flew off to Boston.

Word on the street is that there’s a Pinkberry on Newbury Street now – maybe I’ll visit next summer?

Ten more days!

Until the homecoming dance! I swear, I’m not normally this obsessed with dances, but this year, I’ve been worrying myself silly over whether or not my dress will fit come next Saturday. My older sister is truly incredibly tiny – I feel like I’m going to cause a rip in the dress sometime by the end of the night!

I refuse to gain a pound between now and then, which seems unlikely considering how much Halloween candy there is in the house right now…

Willpower. I can do this!
